Queer Rock Camp in Olympia this summer

Our friend Molly from Songs for Moms is involved in Queer Rock Camp, like Girls Rock Camp but oriented toward queer youth, happening this August in Olympia.  It sounds like a great project.  They have a fundraiser going to help make the camp possible.

Here’s some more information from Molly:

Hey friends!!

As some of you may know Queer Rock Camp is having it’s inaugural session this August in Olympia, Washington. Based on the model of Girls Rock Camp (shout out!!) Queer Rock Camp, a program of Olympia’s non-profit L.G.B.T. youth center, Stonewall Youth. We hope to serve 50 campers between the ages
of 12 and 20, providing the unparalleled experiences of the Girls Rock Camp program to lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual youth. Campers will spend one week forming bands, writing original songs, and participating in a variety of empowering workshops including self-defense, drag, intersections of discrimination, and healthy relationships. The week will culminate in a public showcase at Olympia’s historic Capital Theater.

The recent media attention to the violence that queer youth face is a harrowing reminder to youth that it is not safe to be oneself. While it is so important to begin to address this violence, we must also create environments of hope. Queer Rock Camp aims to create a space where queer youth are celebrated, applauded, and given a voice…a *really* loud voice.

We are currently asking for donations from our community in order to make our inaugural session possible, and continue to expand in the years to come. We appreciate any contributions you can make to help us reach our fund-raising goal. Even just $1 will buy a camper a pair of ear plugs! Thank you so much to those who have already contributed! Please forward this email around to people who might be interested! Check out our website for more information on camp and for camper, and volunteer applications.

Thank you!
