I'm still trying to find out what's up from Archive, but I am working on getting this fixed. I'll work on getting the torrent working as soon as I get back to Bloomington and can seed it properly.

LA area show moved

The show on January 7th that was going to be in LA has been moved to Long Beach because the warehouse where the show was going to be in LA had problems with the police.

Oakland Show Moved

The Haz-Mat warehouse couldn't do the show anymore, so it's now at The Purple House (5716 Genoa St.) The show starts at 7p. I believe the show is a benefit for the collectively owned/run Nabolom Bakery which I heard just got robbed.

The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project Needs Your Urgent Help!

I volunteer with a project called the Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project that sends free books to people in prisons and jails throughout the Midwest, Arizona, and Florida. We do this because many people in prisons and jails cannot afford books and educational programs and prison libraries are often inaccessible, of poor quality, or nonexistent. We get so many requests and postage costs have risen so we are now broke and unable to send out more books. Even a small donation would be a great help to us in being able to continue the work that we do.

so... the new record (CD+LP) is now available for pre-sale at www.noidearecords.com. the release date is listed as december 4th. however, the CDs and LPs should be ready to be mailed out before that (CDs in maybe as little as a week, LPs maybe two) and they will be sent out by the good dudes and ladies at no idea as soon as they receive them. everything will be out (for sure) by december 4th and we will post them for free download then as well. however, we have heard rumors that it has already been floating around on the internet, oh well, i guess it's just the way it goes these days.

SAME OLD SAME OLD

We've been taking some time off, staying at Ryan's parents. Today some folks were watching a documentary about popular music in the US and a particular segment about punk music. I overheard John Doe from X lamenting the arrival of people whose only interest was violence into their punk scene and how they stopped playing the anti-rape song "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline" after they saw dudes pumping their fists, not getting the meaning of the song. Later, Elvis Costello was saying that he always thought of punk as being elitist because working and having children didn't afford him the time or money to go out to the clubs that were the epicenter of the punk scene at the time.

I think it's crazy that the same questions. the same contradictions that seem to be plaguing punk subculture now are the same ones that existed at it's conception and I don't know if that makes me feel more hopeful or more frustrated.

DIY ASSETTS

This quote that I found on a friend's blog about the Allied Media Conference made me think about some things I find missing in DIY Punk:

"There’s very few spaces where you see such amazing, ground-breaking, do-it-yourself activists coming together with all these young people from all these communities where they’ve traditionally been told not to do try to do it themselves or that they can’t do it for themselves. You get to see the best of both communities coming together in this space."

Often discussions about punk and diversity or punk and politics surround how to bring issues or people from other communities into the space occupied by DIY punk. Do-it-yourself ideals and practices are a pretty special thing, but it is also a thing that to a large extent mainly middle or upper class Americans have been able to easily utilize or have been encouraged and empowered to pursue. I'm interested in how DIY punk can share the things it has learned how to do and does well: creating a youth-centered and youth-run culture, collaborating over distance, building social networks, aggregating resources, etc. - with people from other community backgrounds or identities or those pursuing goals other than media creation or traditionally punk political campaigns, and using that exchange to question and refine DIY punk's practices and paradigms.

THINK ABOUT THE SUSAN ORR NOMINATION

I coincidentally found out about this at the same night that we played Ladyfest in Chicago a few days ago. I didn't end up talking about it at the show because the sound was kind of weird and I'm not sure if people could hear me and because I was nervous about talking about the topics of family planning and sex education in a space so connected with gender. While I think these things definitely have a huge impact on the lives of women, I think that they are also really relevant to people in general and I think that only viewing them as "women's issues" has allowed many people who do not identify as women to not question how the topics of contraception or sex education apply to their life or to not take responsibility for considering these things, either in their personal lives or in the public sphere.

Recently, the Bush administration nominated Susan Orr as deputy assistant secretary for population affairs (DASPA). DASPA is a part of the federal government that oversees a program that provides family planning health care to low-income people. Orr is a really bad choice for this position because she has a history of not only conservative views but of actively opposing family planning health care. In the past she has worked with a conservative group called the Family Research Council that supported the Bush administration's proposal to eliminate contraceptives from the health care coverage for Federal Employees.

Susan Orr has also worked in a part of the government that, under the Bush administration, dramatically increased the funding for abstinence-only sex education. Without a doubt, this increase was at the expense of useful sex education that reflected the reality of people's lives.

Planned Parenthood has a petition that you can sign to tell the president that you oppose Orr's nomination. The online petition is at http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/oppose_orr_ppan While it's a good idea to be vocal to the federal government that appointing someone who has a history of being very anti-contraceptives to head a Federal family planning program is a really bad thing, this is not the first time that the Bush administration has made similar policy decisions. I think this subject is also a reminder about how limited or endangered the access to contraceptives or realistic, helpful sex education is in so many communities. I'm sure that if you don't feel affected by this, there is someone who close to you who is. Or, if this issue seems totally remote, it might be a good chance to ask why social taboos within your community or social network keep people from talking about, and therefore addressing needs surrounding sexuality. Finally, in some communities, there are organizations ranging from mainstream ones like Planned Parenthood, to more grassroots, community-specific ones that are struggling to offer access to contraceptives, other family-planning health care, or good sex education. I urge folks to find out more about what is available in your community and use and support those services. I took the Planned Parenthood in Bloomington for granted until I went there for a routine STD test (I figured that I was a grownup and it was the responsible thing to do to my partners to get tested) and realized the breadth of services that were offered, at accessible prices, and that the people I dealt with were really respectful and helpful and had to put up with a lot of shit.

Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project Pack-A-Thon

On Thursday, October 11th the Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project is holding a Pack-A-Thon at its space next to Boxcar Books and Community Center at 310A S Washington Street, near the corner of Third and Washington Streets, across from Third Street Park. The event will start at 2pm on Thursday afternoon and go a full 12 hours until 2am that night.

The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project currently has a backlog of book requests from prisoners that spans at least three months. With the help of Pack-A-Thon volunteers, we hope to significantly reduce that backlog!

Volunteers at the Pack-A-Thon will be reading letters sent from prisoners, filling requests for books from our collection of books donated by members of the Bloomington community, and packaging those books so that they are ready to be mailed. No prior experience is necessary, and training will be provided to new volunteers on the hour, every hour.

While we hope to get a lot of work done, this will also be a fun and festive event, so bring music, snacks and beverages to share, as well as everyone you know! Additionally, book donations and donations of packing supplies such as envelopes large enough to hold 3 books, large sheets of paper that could be used to wrap packages of books, or packing tape will be very useful.

For those unable to attend this special event, Pages meets several times every week to help send books to the imprisoned. The regularly scheduled meeting times are Mondays (during the school year) from 7-9pm , Thursdays from 7-11pm, and Sundays from 2-5pm.

The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project is an all volunteer effort that strives to provide free reading material to prisoners in the United States. By providing free reading materials upon request, we hope to aid in the rehabilitation process and stimulate critical thinking behind bars. Our volunteers are concerned citizens and activists interested in rehabilitation, rather than punishment.

The project exists to alleviate pain, boredom, and attrition and to provide a direct opportunity for self-education. Additionally, we exist because prison libraries sometimes fail in this respect, and are understocked, or are only able to be patronized during specific and limited hours. Finally, The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project exists to inform others about the condition of the prison system in Indiana and throughout the nation and the effects of incarceration on our communities. Through the letters and books that we send and receive, we hope to build connections between those who are within the criminal justice system, and their communities at large.

we leave in two days for tour and we are very excited. all of the information is now posted for the shows except for the locations of the Minneapolis and Asheville shows. we will add the information for those shows (from tour) just as soon as we know for sure where they will be held. also, our good friend Steven (who you might recognize from the cover of the great depression) will be joining us on tour distributing books and literature for microcosm publishing and playing films when possible. he will be at all the shows until Detroit, then meet back with us at the fest in Florida.

p.s. several people have written asking if it is possible to buy tickets for the 2nd philadelphia show (at the resturant). it is not.. however you can buy tickets the day of the show (for the later show) at the door of the earlier show (at the church) they will be selling them until 6pm. if you are worried about the later show selling out, this would be the best thing to do.

turning five years old + A NEW RECORD!

in a few weeks we are going to finish up a new record. it will be released in october on NO IDEA and has a tenative title of "the fear, the fear, the fear". it is 10 songs in about 24 minutes!! it's short but we are very enthusiastic about it. we also have quite a bit of tour plans. most of the east coast/midwest tour for october is now set up. in january, we will be doing a few shows on the way out west and about four shows in california followed by, a now confirmed, australian tour! thanks so much for all the show requests over the last month.. i wish we could go everywhere, but in reality we can only cover so much ground in three weeks. i hope it works out that, if we could not do a show in your area, one of the shows is nearby. for those of you close to bloomington.. we will be having a five year anniversary party on saturday, september 29th! we won't be playing at the party.. just hanging out with friends. we will post more details about party as it comes nearer.

RECORDING AND STUFF..

so, after spending a few super fun weeks together, Theo has returned to the great state of Georgia, Geoff is away traveling and the rest of us have pretty much gotten back to the day to day here in Bloomington. We recorded 10 new songs! We don't know what our plans are to do with them, but i think we are all really excited about them and we plan to finish their recording at the end of September. Other than that, we will start setting up an east coast/midwest tour for October soon and we have plans to play the fest 6. Also, we are making plans to come to Australia in January which may include a few west coast US shows!! But, as of now, there are no upcoming shows planned.. we will post them as we get them set!! thanks for reading.
